Molina Healthcare of Washington Partners with Washington State YMCAs to Offer Diabetes Prevention Program

06/12/2024

BOTHELL, Wash., June 12, 2024 – Molina Healthcare of Washington (“Molina”) has partnered with Washington State YMCAs to offer a year-long, evidence-based type 2 diabetes prevention program consisting of a six-month YMCA family membership anywhere in the state of Washington, weekly Safeway vouchers to purchase nutritious food, and lifestyle resources for Molina members.

According to the Washington Health Alliance, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) shows that nearly 10% of Washington residents have diabetes, and another 34% have prediabetes – higher than normal blood glucose levels that do not reach the level to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes increases with age and is highest among adults 65 years and older. Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians generally have a higher prevalence of diabetes than whites.

Diabetes Prevention Program classes are being held both virtually and in-person, and contain 26 sessions focused on increasing physical activity, creating healthier habits, and sustaining weight loss. Molina members are already enrolling in this life-changing program and 60% have already reported weight loss progress.

“Since starting YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program, I have not only noticed physical changes from diet and exercise, but changes in my thought patterns and attitude as well, all of which have worked to improve my quality of life,” said a Diabetes Prevention Program Molina member. “I really love the conversations with my fellow-participants and our coach, as they are always insightful and inspiring, and make all of us aware that we aren't alone in our struggles and triumphs."
